Remix, Reuse, Recycle – 1:1 Technology

During this week in CEP811, we focused on how everything is a remix. I love this concept! As I watched Kirby Ferguson’s (2013) videos, I found myself agreeing with his points. Lately, every movie or tv show that has premiered has been a remake or adapted from a comic book (Ferguson 2013). Ferguson (2013) referred to this as “remixing.” To understand this, I thought about music and YouTube. Upcoming artists (such as Justin Bieber) often “remix” popular songs to show off their talents and upload them to YouTube. In addition, regular people often upload new songs with lyrics to help people learn the song. After reading Lawrence Lessig’s (2008) introduction, I began to ask myself if this was legal. Should we be able to upload a song even though we had remixed it? Can we post videos with songs featured in them?

This lead me to Creative Commons. Regular people upload their music, videos, and images all to be remixed, reused, and recycled. Talk about awesome! This week, we used this information to create a video around a technology buzzword. To do this, we used a free online software called Popcorn Maker. Before I delve into my video, let me tell you about this software. I spent about ten hours working with this software, trying to get it to work correctly. At first, I had found an awesome HTML5 video to use, (after about 30 mins of searching) but this video caused my project to be unable to save every time I uploaded it (causing two hours of work to be deleted). After another hour, I finally found a different video, this time a Vimeo link. I had placed the video in, lined up the perfect clip, entered in all of my text, and POOF another problem. When I went to play the video from the actual link, the clip would start at the WRONG part. Talk about frustrating. After playing around with this for another hour, I finally decided to delete the video and use images instead. This worked like a charm. However, when I began adding music, I hit another snag. Soundcloud clips would not work! I tried two different songs and found that once I added the small clip I wanted, the song would start playing its ENTIRE length and would not stop. When it FINALLY stopped, it wouldn’t play in the video at all. Another frustration. Instead, I used YouTube videos as my music, which worked out better.

Whew. After all of that, I finally have my video created. I decided to focus on 1:1 Technology, because I think this concept is amazing and my district is planning on implementing this in the next few years. The first half of my video is in black and white, because I wanted to focus on how it is “old school” teaching and how incorporating technology is the new wave. This is why the second half is in color and has upbeat music.

Finally, here is my project. I hope you enjoy (and I hope it works correctly)!!
