Wicked Problem – Failure as Learning Mode

Students often focus on their grades rather than what they are learning.  They come to the classroom scared to “fail” or answer a question incorrectly in front of their peers, or getting a bad grade.  The New Media Consortium (2013) has established “failure as learning mode” as a Wicked Problem or a problem that is very complex. Our group attempted to shine a new light on “failure” by collaborating and trying to come up with an answer to this Wicked Problem.

Please see this Prezi Presentation and written paper to see the draft of our answer to the Wicked Problem.

  1. I think your group provided a strong argument on PBL in rethinking teaching in the 21st century. The evidence proves that PBL provides students with the necessary skills to be successful in the 21st Century. In regards to your visual representation, is the purpose of aligning “21st century skills” to the far left because that is the most important component of PBL? Does the order or alignment indicate importance in the proposal? I think it would be helpful to provide a simple description under each line. Aside from that, I think your group has a powerful proposal!

  2. Hi Blair-

Agree-teaching students to accept failure is important. In looking at the prezi and the white paper-I am was a little confused by the video game reference and then going into the discussion about changing the grading system. Then in the prezi it talks about collaboration. Are you guys looking at tying collaboration into the white paper? I am wondering if you could eliminate the video game piece and use Google as a way to encourage failure through collaboration. Or if you are going to use the video game reference-talk more about how the use of video games as a solution.
